  • Bude by Rail

To get to Bude nowadays, the best way to travel is by car or coach. But once upon a time, many visitors arrived in the area by train.

Bude was not considered important enough to warrant it's own station so the railway line effectively stopped at Holsworthy. However, as tourism developed, on 10 August 1898, the line was extended to Bude. The London and South Western Railway (L and SWR) positively encouraged holiday passenger travel. The Atlantic Coast Express left Waterloo at 10.35am and arrived in Bude at 3.25pm. A car journey London to Bude would take approximately 4 hours nowadays. As car ownership developed and the use of lorries for transporting goods became popular, the decline of the railway began.

In the 1960's passenger traffic severely declined and on 1 October 1966, the line was closed.

  • Eden Sessions

James Morrison started the Sessions this year. James was educated at Newquay and was a busker in Truro. Amy Winehouse also gigged at Eden this summer. A show that was very worthwhile seeing although she just disappeared at the end of her set, no encores or anything else. Lily Allen was overwhelmed by the size of the audience at Eden that greeted her and was clearly humbled by it. Her performance was superb and proved that she can sing.

David Marriot of Launceston was crowned Cornwall's Strongest Man at the end of last month. Weighing 23 stone and 6ft 4" tall, he had to lift a 200lb log, carry a 333lb valve, do a car lift, a truck pull, a tyre flip and load three 18 gallon barrels on to a lorry. Phew!!!

  • The Cornish Way

For those that enjoy cycling, why not follow the Cornish Way. As the West Country is probably the most popular holiday destination in the UK, it is amazing to find that once you leave the 'Atlantic Highway' how seemingly empty the roads and lanes can be. The Cornish Way or County Cycle Route, meanders it's way from Bude across to Bodmin Moor to Padstow and beyond. If you haven't brought your bicycle with you, why not hire one and explore the beautiful unspoilt countryside, soak up the cavalcade of colours each of the seasons brings, study the fauna and flora. And then finish your day off with a fabulous Cornish Cream Tea.

For those exploring the area on foot, take the South West Coastal Path, which runs for 60 miles from Marsland to Carnewas.

Bude Jive Club took home 4 prizes in the Bude Carnival last weekend - Best Artistic, Best Local Float, Best Nautical and Best in Float!

The standard of entries was excellent, making the judging very difficult.

The Mayor of Bude-Stratton, Mr. Peter Labroy led the procession accompanied by his wife Clare. The weather had been fine until that point, but as the procession left the heavens opened and everyone got a good soaking. But this did not mar the event and everyone had a good time.

  • Holsworthy Show

The Holsworthy and Stratton Agricultural Show was held on Thursday 23 August. As a result of the Foot and Mouth outbreak, the committee said that it was very disappointing that they were unable to have livestock at the show. However, the poultry exhibition, heavy horse log pulling, chainsaw display and miniature donkeys made up for it. Vintage vehicles paraded in the main ring to replace the Grand Parade of Stock. And of course, the weather was absolutely glorious with wall to wall sunshine.
